Boy Love (BL) series continued to gain more following and although 2017's number of BL related series were more, the quality of 2018's list is truly remarkable with great stories and wonderful acting from talented actors. The growing popularity of these themes in Asian TV makes us anticipate what's next in the years to come. Here are the best BL themed or BL infused series of 2018.
1. Love By Chance
Saint and Perth gave us one of the newer BL couples to stan (#PeteAe). A timid young guy (Pete) meets his savior/protector (Ae) and their story blossomed from a random encounter to a wonderful relationship.
2. Kiss Me Again
The events on this series comes before the story of Kiss: The Series. We are shown how the love between Pete and Kao became to be and makes us the BL couple of New and Tay Tawan one of the more successful ones in recent years.
3. SOTUS S
While this is technically a 2017 series that ended in 2018, SOTUS S lets us continue on the story of Kongpob and Arthit and how their lives came to be after a few years of being together. Their challenges of not being in one school anymore is shown and how they manage the life of being together. Krist and Singto remains to be one of the well loved BL couples of all time.
4. Together With Me: The Next Chapter
#MaxTul has given us arguably the sexiest BL couples in recent years. We get to see the next chapter on the lives of Korn and Knock and the difficulties of staying together, peer pressure and keeping the love strong. While this has a more mature tone than the first season, it was still a must watch for fans of the 2 guys.
5. HiStory 2: Crossing The Line
This Taiwanese series that focuses on love relationship developing on the courts of volleyball is one of the best Taiwanese BLs to date. And we also had a side story of two "brothers" falling in love with each other.
6. What The Duck
"What The Duck" may not be as widely received as the others in the list but this series gave us cute couple Oreo and Strong (#PopOat). The two gained a solid fan base and fans are excited of the potential 2nd season on the horizon.
7. Our Skyy
While this is technically not a full-pledged BL series, this 5-part anthology lets us enjoy some of our favorite BL couples in their single episode spectacle. We get to see the continuation of the stories of Arthit and Kongpob (SOTUS), Kao and Pete (Kiss Me Again), Mork and Tee (Cause You're My Boy), Rome and Pick (Puppy Honey) and Sun and In (Edge of 17).
8. Cause You're my Boy
Mork and Tee is one of the newest well loved BL couples and with a simple yet sweet story line, this series gave BL fans reason to be happy. Frank and Drake's portrayal of their roles were believable and makes us love them more.
9. It's Complicated
This is not a regular BL Thai series as it also talks about hetero relationships. The tone of the series is much more mature and lets us dive into 4 different type of relationships and the challenges each of them face.
10. My Dream
We rarely see Thai BL series that veers away from the traditional school setting and themes but "My Dream" did just that. This supernatural series was a breath of fresh air and gained a solid fan base all across Asia.
11. Advance Bravely
It's a bit sad that due to its mature content, this series got all the attention in the wrong ways. This Chinese drama had a solid story and a cast of great actors and was one of the best surprises of 2018.
12. Friend Zone
This Thai drama is one the well received series of 2018 and although its main theme does not focus on the BL part, fans were cheering with the idea of Singto being in the cast.
13. HiStory 2: Right or Wrong
HiStory series made a breakthrough year for Taiwan BLs and "Right or Wrong" is a solid entry on their reportoire. Not as strong as "Crossing The Line" but the show still made fans "kilig".
14. Club Friday The Series 10: Kao Tur Lae Eak Khon
Club Friday focuses on different stories of life, relationship and the like and their 10th series touched the BL side for a bit which worked well for avid fans.
15. Bangkok Love Stories 2: Innocence
Netflix showed some love to this Thai series. This is not the normal teeny-bopper BL series but features bisexual characters and gay relationships in a good way. And with Max as one of the cast members, the BL universe came to see this show.
16. I Love You
Only lasting 3 episodes, this Thai series had some solid fan base in 2018.
17. My Bromance (Taiwan)
The Taiwanese version may pale in comparison to the Thai version but it was also a solid remake and version of the well loved BL show.
18. My Baby Bright
This is only a Thai special with one episode but fans of Krist/Singto pairing made this special episode become a hit. Fans were obviously wanting for more of these two talented actors.
19. Ur Tadhana Season 2
Blued presents this Filipino web-series which was a welcome development to Pinoy BL fans who tuned in with the first season. We get to see the love triangle of Justin, Yosef and Rex which was fun and simply relatable.
20. Mermaid Sauna
Taiwan surely made waves in the BL-verse in 2018 and while "Mermaid Sauna" is unconventional and has a sort of mystery theme, it was still well received and gained moderate success.
