2018 is another banner year for Hollywood with numerous box-office successes and critical winners as well. It seemed like what 2017 has started has continued and even improved in 2018. Here are the Top Hollywood movies of the past year.
1. Black Panther
Black Panther proved to be one of the genuine successes of 2018. This MCU film surprised everyone with a strong global box-office showing and a story that is well loved by audiences and critics alike. The film is building to be one of the strong contenders for a possible first Best Picture nomination for the MCU.
2. A Star is Born
This modern retelling of A Star is Born both gained commercial success and critical praises as well. Lady Gaga's great turn into acting made her star even brighter and her chemistry with Bradley Cooper is simply heartfelt. This Bradley Cooper helmed film is simply emotional and such was even highlighted with its great soundtrack by Gaga and Bradley.
3. Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse
The best animated film from 2018 hands down. This Spidey flick is both entertaining and well-written. It marks another victory for Sony which is slowly building its Spiderverse.
4. Avengers: Infinity War
The first half of the finality of the Infinity Saga sure delivered with a bang. MCU is not known for putting too many risks with its film but this film surely caught a lot off guard. And with a box-office haul that spells billions, fans are eagerly awaiting the 4th Avengers film this year.
5. A Quiet Place
This John Krasinski directed thriller stars her real life wife Emily Blunt and has made quite a cult following in 2018. The chills were all felt with each scene making you feel nervous and afraid even in the absence of sound.
6. Mission Impossible: Fallout
The MI juggernaut keeps on going and this latest installment in the Ethan Hunt saga did not disappoint. Tom Cruise makes another stellar turn as the well beloved spy and this time he's joined by another marquee name - Henry Cavill. I applaud how well this film was made from the cinematography, action sequences, stunts, musical score and performances of the cast which puts it as my personal fave in the franchise.
7. Roma
Netflix is continuing its juggernaut in the streaming service and of all its released films, Roma has made heads turn and notice. This Alfonso Cuaron Mexican language film is full of compelling scenes and heart-felt emotions.
8. The Incredibles 2
It took over a decade to finally have a sequel to the wonderful Incredibles movie and it was definitely worth the wait. This second film made huge commercial success and is well loved by critics as well. Audience did not notice the big gap in the years of release as it all seemed like just yesterday.
9. Crazy Rich Asians
Asian led movies in Hollywood are often leaning towards action and martial arts and Crazy Rich Asians differ in that it is a light drama/love story. Based on a satirical 2013 romantic comedy novel by Kevin Kwan, this film delivered in showing a simple but enjoyable film. Its stars Constance Wu and Henry Golding made audiences feel the chemistry.
10. Love, Simon
This film focuses in the story of a closeted gay high school boy and the rigors of balancing the difficulties of social life and growing up as gay and finding the love of his life. The story is light-hearted but the simplistic acting of lead star Nick Robinson makes this film a must watch film from 2018.
11. Aquaman
DC triumphed with Wonder Woman from last year and this year they did it with Aquaman. Although not as commercially big as the MCU movies, this Jason Momoa starrer still proved a major success for Warner Brothers. Its stunning visuals made us be immersed in the fictional world of the Atlantians. And how could we forget how hot Jason is.
12. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
The Jurassic brand is proving to be such a strong brand. This sequel to the 2015 blockbuster behemoth also made over a billion dollars worldwide although falling a bit short of its predecessor. Although it generally received mixed reviews, this is still one of the few guilty watching pleasures of 2018 and the future looks bright for the franchise overall.
13. Bohemian Rhapsody
This Queen biopic brought back the nostalgia to all the band's fans. And with the awards season just around the cornet, it is turning to be one of the great contenders specially actor Rami Malek which delivered a stunning portrayal of frontman Freddie Mercury.
14. Venom
Sony has not made steady success outside of the Spiderman movies but it all changed with Venom. Although technically still a "Spidey" related flick, this film focused on the anti-hero more without the direct connection with Spiderman. Tom Hardy was a great casting choice to play the titular role and this early talks of a sequel are spiraling in.
15. Insidious: The Last Key
The Insidious series is arguably one of the scarier film franchises in recent years and The Last Key also delivered. It is a chilling and spine-tingling experience which could bring some sleepless times after watching.
16. Mary Poppins Returns
Emily Blunt surely is one busy lady in 2018. Mary Poppins Returns returned us to the world of this well beloved nanny and Walt Disney again did a good job with this adaptation.
17. Deadpool 2
Not as charming or wonderful as the first Deadpool, this second installment still proved to be a strong sophomore entry for the beloved character. And with Ryan Reynolds around with all the comedic turns and banters this remained one of the films that delivered the laughs from last year - in an adult and not so wholesome kind of way.
18. Ready Player One
Surprisingly this film performed a bit below the expectations at the box-office. But this Steven Spielberg directed sci-fi flick is entertaining and contains just the right action and fun enough for one to binge watch.
19. Bird Box
Netflix turned this film into gold as it became one of the more watched films in the streaming service last year. This post-apocalyptic thriller which stars Sandra Bullock sure did gained audience support as what is strongly shown with several memes regarding the "blindfold" centered theme. Eerie and a bit disturbing, Bird Box surely managed to stir some noise in 2018.
