MY TOP 10 FILMS FOR 2011 (NON-SEQUELS, NON-FRANCHISE)

In an earlier feature, I have laid down my Top 10 anticipated prequels, sequels and spin-offs for 2011. But aside from these wondeful movies, a lot of new titles are up for showing in 2011. From drama, thriller, love story, suspense and action. 2011 may be off to a slow start bu there are plenty to watch out for in the coming months. Here are the ten films I am looking forward to.

1. I Am Number Four
- Aliens never looked this hot. Pitticus Lore's book has finally been made into a film. Though the premise of this film is much more akin to that of the "Twilight" series, there's something in this film that makes me wanna see it. Based on the trailers, there are lots of butt kicking scenes and stunts and gorgeous bodies as well. Starring a hunky Alex Pettyfer and Glee's Dianna Agron, I am sure not gonna miss this one.

2. Sucker Punch
- Ladies galore! Yup. This is one of the selling points of this film. A hard core action flick which stars an all-girl cast who's ready for hot action. Graphic novels have been received well in the past (300, Watchmen) and I don't see why Sucker Punch would be an exception. The trailers were hot so as with the girls. Emily Browning and Vanessa Hudgens star on this high-octane film.

3. Black Swan
- Though this film has been shown in 2010 in the US, it is only now in 2011 that Black Swan has been released in the Philippines. This thriller is one of the must watch films in my list. A psycho thriller about a ballerina played by Natalie Portman and her battles on the stage and with herself, this sure is one interesting film. Another hottie Mila Kunis also stars.

4. Green Lantern
- Ryan Reynolds on tights, what more could I say? Yup, that dude is really hot and extremely gorgeous. That's one reason why this film is one to watch. But aside from that, it is interesting to see how this film will do well in the box-office. This is a daring move as this is one of the DC inspired films outside of Batman and Superman. Based on the trailer, this is not gonna be as serious as the two as this film might bring in some comedic lines on board.

5. Red Riding Hood
- Another thriller up for good showing in 2011. Amanda Seyfried stars on this modern retelling of the classic tale. Darker and edgier than the well-loved children's story, this film has a "Twilight" feel in it as well which makes it quite interesting.

6. Cowboys Vs. Aliens
- Comic book adaptations are also alive in 2011 and one of the films that really grabbed my attention is "Cowboys and Aliens". Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford will topbill this sci-fi action thriller. I am eager to watch this one. This looks like it's gonna be power packed with action. Yeah, man! Cowboys with high-tech guns!

7. The Adjustment Bureau
- Matt Damon stars in this psychological thriller which will keep you guessing. Based on the foundation of love, this film is a roller coaster mind boggler as Matt tries to fight for his love amidst all the men trying to separate them. Emily Blunt (Devil Wears Prada) stars as the love interest. The trailers are nice and I would definitely watch this.

8. Real Steel
- For those who miss Hugh Jackman, prepare to smile this 2011. He's back as one of the leads in the action film "Real Steel". This film has a lot of robots in it to the delight of kids and young adults but not as big as the Transformers. Aside from that, this has a feeling of a video game in it. Something to watch.

9. Beastly
- Another book adaptation hits the screen. And you'll see familiar people in it. Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four) will star on this modern retelling of "Beauty and the Beast". This love story drama is poised to touch hearts and make us shed a tear or two. Let's see if this can live up to its hype.

10. Thor
- Two Avengers will have their film debuts this year but I am hesitant to watch "Captain America". But for "Thor", I am gonna make some risks. High swinging action is promised by the looks of the trailers and that is something to look forward to. Plus, Natalie Portman is there to provide love interest.

MOVIE REVIEW: 127 HOURS

Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle makes a bold move with this film. This is not the usual firepowered or intense film or the lavishly extravagant ones. When I saw 127 Hours, my initial impression was a feeling like movies "Phone Booth" "Speed" and "Buried". That boils in a mix of good and bad.

The scenes were predominantly shot in one location but that did not bore me by much. This film was actually packed with much intensity and drama. And unlike the other films that I mentioned were all or about 95% of the scene were in one place, 127 Hours was filled with flashbacks and memory hallucinations. Truly this film lets us follow every gripping moment on Aron Ralston's journey and struggle to escape the trap he got into. The longer he is trapped, the darker it is.

James Franco's performance is to be noted in here as well. He delivered something that keeps us on the edge of our seats. Although, I practically was surprised of his Oscar nod. This is not as compelling as Slumdog but still something to watch. 3.5 out of 5 popcorns.

MAGIC... LOVE...

Do you believe in magic? I do!

Not the sorcery and witchcraft thing. But the one that spells love. It is one of the most powerful thing ever to hit one person. The magic of love is something that’s irresistible. Only the naive and the emotionless bunch would not dive into love once it presents itself. Love is a wonderful feeling. It makes one happy and truly takes out a brighter person in each one of us.

But how do we know when it’s for real? That’s when we need to believe. If we don’t believe on things, those would not happen. Likewise if we don’t have any beliefs in love, we would just be left wanting it but would never experience it. It is something that we need to instill in our hearts and minds. Only then will our eyes be opened wide for us to see its true power.

Love is strong and wonderful but it also is shy. It shows up only to those who really believe. Now, do you believe in love?

MY ANTICIPATED SEQUELS AND PREQUELS FOR 2011

As of writing, around 27 movies for 2011 are either sequels, prequels or spin-offs from moive series and franchises. This early I'll list down my ten anticipated movies for the year.

1. Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides
- This is the 4th of the Pirates movie and I am such a fan of the series - mainly because of Johnny Depp's great acting and comedic timing. It is also quite interesting to see how the series would shape up without Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. But this series gets one new hottie - Penelope Cruz. I would definitely see this one.

2. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows (Part 2)
- HP8 is officially the last of the Harry Potter films. While HP7 really left me hanging, I know this would be an epic film. It's so sad however to see Harry and the rest of the gang say bye bye. But nevertheless, I know this film franchise would be ending on a very high note. Expect more action, drama and effects this 2011.

3. Scream 4
- While it tooks years before this fourth film gets in cinemas, I know it is worth the wait. Master of Horror, Wes Craven takes us back to the Scream fest we once enjoyed. Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette would be back with some younger and fresh faces - Hayden Panettiere and Emma Roberts to name a few.

4. Transformers: Dark of The Moon
- The 2nd Transformers somehow disappointed me and I hope they rebound and give us a good one this time around. Although Megan Fox is officially out of the movie franchise, Shia Lebouf and the robots are still very much back. The teaser trailers however are not what I expect. Hope they are cooking something grand.

5. Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1
- Edward, Bella and Jacob are back and this is just Part 1 of the last book of the Twilight series. I am hoping for more action and more drama. Though I still root for Jacob. Sorry Edward fanatics, I just don't dig pale people. =).

6. X-Men: First Class
- I am curious on how this reboot would do in terms of story and box-office. Though this early, I have a lot of questions on casting like where are the original ones like Cyclops, Jean Grey and Iceman, why Angel is a lady and so much more. I'd still liek to give this film a chance.

7. Happy Feet 2
- Happy Feet was such a nice film and to get back the penguins one more time is something I would watch out for. This is actually the only animated feature that is in my top 10 although other cartoons are bound for a 2011 release (Cars 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss In Boots). The song and dance numbers in the first film is something I'd love to see once more.

8. Fast Five
- Fast and The Furious Part 5 and they are back again. More action, new cars and some new cast members which include "The Rock". Let's see how this would fare. Remember that the last F&F was not much of a hit and the last "The Rock" film "Faster" was a dud.

9. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
- Ethan Hunt played by Tom Cruise is back and I am eager to see this one. It has been years since the last MI and ever since that Tom has not been a box-office draw.

10. Sherlock Holmes 2
- Witty and funny are two words I'd describe the first Sherlock Holmes. If that is something to base this second film on, then I expect to enjoy this one. Robert Downey Jr. would be tested if he can start another successful franchise after Iron Man.

ULYSSES KING FOR UST FASHION SHOW

Proudly Batangueno by heart!
Just a few months back, I have featured designer Ulysses King in my blog and once more let us take a look on the talent and extraordinary fashion magic of this exquisite designer.

He's truly one of the more interesting fashion designers of this generation. He has been gaining a lot of accolades and praises ever since his first appearance at the 2010 Holiday Collection of PFW. He then went on to appear on several other shows and made his return to the PFW scene last September for the Spring/Summer Collection. He has been featured in several articles in different newspapers and fashion blogs showing that he really is a star on the rise. This time around he's gonna take part in "STATUS", a UST Fashion Show this Friday. February 11, 2011.

And while waiting for that, we take a look further on Uly's designs based on the eyes of some of his models for the show. Here are some of the notes of the models:

Earvin Aquino takes particular note on how Uly focuses on structure making each design a good fit. It was mentioned by him that the designs have an added twist that makes them stand out. He believes that Uly's designs are statement designs and that he makes sure it is different. He noted that Uly may be grounded with earth tones but he loves the way Uly injects stunning colors to be part of his over-all ensemble. Brown with a spark of pink and a dash of bright shades.

Christian De Los Reyes sees the designs as simple, yet elegant and striking. He noted that most of the designs are distinct and truly Ulysses' own. He loves the way the colors are mixed and matched. He also likes the way Uly makes use of accessories to bring the entire design to life.

Wes Torrejon may be young and new in the biz but he has shown great appreciation with uly's designs. He sees Uly's collection as high fashion and not "pang-masa". He likes it a lot and notes that unlike others, Uly's designs are not boring and really something interesting.

Luis Castillo's take on Uly's design is also plain praises. He specifically like the wearability factor despite the design's uniqueness. He says that Uly may use black and brown on his designs but still make them stunning and stand-out.

Joel Leelin is all praise for Uly's designs. He says Uly is not afraid in taking risks on designs. He notes that the designs are more on the artistic values which makes them really interesting and really noteworthy of attention. He believes the clothes are not generic and really has a Uly trademark on it. He added that visual presentation is what makes Uly really good.

Dheyle Dizon shares that most of Uly's designs are really eye catchers in a very good kind of way. He thinks that Uly's designs are unique and not traditional. He confesses that he has used some of the clothes Uly designed and has grabbed just praises from people who see the designs. He believes that Uly thinks outside the box and has admired how the designer works on his designs and how each of them are presented.

Julius Abanilla says that what he likes with Uly's design is its wearability. He took note on the good fit of the clothes and how comfortable the clothes are. He says that it is definitely something people would love wearing.

All the best on the Fashion Show! I know you'll wow them all once more.
