2017 TOP INTERNATIONAL TV SHOWS

2017 is a year of great TV time as a lot of wonderful series kept us glued in the past year. For the year that has gone by, here are my Top 50 shows.

1. Stranger Things
Netflix has certainly changed the landscape of TV viewing. With Stranger Things they certainly hit the jackpot. You are drawn to mysteries behind Eleven and everything that surrounds her. The series was a great a mix of investigative drama alongside supernatural elements making it different with combining childlike sensibilities into the fray. Millie Bobby Brown instantly came into fame with her portrayal as Eleven. Truly a masterpiece of heightened proportions, Stanger Things make us believe and question at the same time.

2. Game of Thrones
On its 7th season, Game of Thrones continues its great run of success. The HBO fantasy drama may have an abbreviated season with only 7 episodes but it was their highest rated season to date. I was drawn to each character from the good ones like Jon Snow, Daenerys and Tyrion and to the evil ones more particularly Cersei and the Night Walkers. Season 8 may be far off as it will start in 2019 but 2017's season was probably the best. Great action sequences and visuals and full emotions on every moment.

3. Riverdale
If you loved Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead, then that may be the reasons you tuned in this series. But the show departed from the funny and bubblegum theme of school and friends instead translated it into a intriguing dark drama that involves mystery, relationships and even murder. You will certainly get hooked with every episode. You either hate the characters or super love them.

4. Big Little Lies
Complete of an ensemble cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailen Woodley, this HBO drama had tons of people buzzing around it. And they did not disappoint as the series was a wonderfully conceptualized gem as we follow the three ladies with the drama and conflicts of being dragged into a murder investigation. Lies, deception and secrets all over the place, Big Little Lies is one of the best new shows of 2017.

5. Legion
For me arguably the best Marvel TV series to date, Legion is an offshoot of the X-men Universe. The story focuses on Haller, mutant son of Charles Xavier, played by Dan Stevens who is a mutant diagnosed with schizophrenia at a very young age. Legion is a success as it is masterfully superior and brilliantly daring while not conforming to traditional superhero conceits and plots.

6. Sense 8
This is definitely one of the best shows of 2017. The series focuses on eight strangers from different parts of the world who suddenly become "sensates"; human beings who are mentally and emotionally linked. Each scene was gripping and intriguing and you are easily drawn to each of the characters. With a multinational cast, it quickly became a hit to many. But while 2017 saw its last season, we are still anxiously hoping there could be more in the future.

7. 13 Reasons Why
While many people see this series as something that objectifies suicide, I still love the idea of narration, flashbacks and reimaginings. 13 Reasons Why managed to put a question mark on all faces without anyone knowing who to blame and up to what extent. With a stellar cast of relatively new faces, it has successfully translated the book into a worthwhile TV experience. Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford became Hollywood sensations in just a blink of an eye.

8. Black Mirror
If you're looking for a great science fiction then look no more. Black Mirror is different in the way it examines modern society, particularly with regard to the unanticipated consequences of advancements and technologies. Already on its 4th season (2nd with Netflix), we expect to dive in more the world of science with all its peculiarities and complexities.

9. Scandal
Who would not know "Olivia Pope"? This lady was a picture of fierceness and feist and was spectacularly portrayed by actress Kerry Washington. This is not your normal political thriller as it comes with everything you never expect. You are drawn to each of the characters and how each one of them are intertwined in this drama. Scandal will surely be missed as they had their 7th and final season last 2017.

10. Will & Grace
Welcome back! During its initial 8 seasons Will & Grace During was one of the most successful television series with gay principal characters. And with their return this 2017 a lot of fans welcomed them with both arms. Eric McCromack, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes returns as the quarter who will surely tickle your funny bones.

11. A Handmaid's Tale
One of the critically acclaimed series of 2017 is this Hulu standout. Based on the novel with same name we are welcomed to dystopic world - one after a Second American Civil War. In here the women called "Handmaids" are forced to be sex slaves. Elizabeth Moss as the lead star of this series was so convincing and her every line and emotion was deeply felt.

12. Twin Peaks: The Return
16 long years was the wait but it the reboot finally came. Twin Peaks; The Return continues from where the old series left. Kyle Maclachlan reprises the main role together with majority of the previous casts. The mystery, horror and drama gets amplified and we can't argue enough that it was worth the long wait.

13. The Leftovers
The Leftovers finally wrapped up after 3 intriguing seasons. This HBO drama lets us into a series of questions as we unravel mystery after the other. Be mind boggled as you will certainly raise your doubts on every scene.

14. Grey's Anatomy
14 Seasons strong and people still find interest with this well loved medical drama. While a string of old cast members have all said goodbyes, the series still banks on the lead of Meredith Grey played by Ellen Pompeo. Both gripping and emotional, we are treated to a rollercoaster of emotions that touches the deepest of one's heart.

15. Marvel's Runaways
Marvel has consistently come up with one great show after the other and Runaways was of no exception. The series focuses on six teenagers from different backgrounds who unite against a common enemy — their criminal parents. In a show of intrigue and conflicts one is expected to be at the edge of their seats every viewing time.

Here are the rest of the wonderful TV viewing habits for 2017.
